The FTCE Mathematics subtest is the one candidates dread, and the dread is usually specific: it has been years, the last maths classroom was a long time ago, and every study guide seems to begin at a level that assumes the material is merely rusty rather than gone.
That assumption is the problem. Someone who last saw algebra fifteen years ago does not need a faster review; they need a runway. Starting a review course at chapter one of "solving linear equations" when you no longer remember what a variable is for produces the same result every time.

Mathematics is subtest 828, one of the four independent subtests that make up the General Knowledge Test — alongside Essay (825), English Language Skills (826) and Reading (827). It is computer-based, approximately 35 multiple-choice questions, with 1 hour 40 minutes to complete it.
It is scored on a scale, and the passing score is 200. It is also scored separately from the other three, which is the most useful structural fact about the whole examination: if you fail Mathematics, you retake Mathematics. Your passing Reading score is untouched.
That separability should shape your plan. Many candidates sit the three subtests they are confident about first, bank those scores, and then give Mathematics its own preparation period and its own test date. It costs an extra trip and it removes the pressure of carrying a weak subject through a long session.
You get an on-screen four-function calculator. Four functions: add, subtract, multiply, divide. No scientific functions, no memory, no fraction key. You may not bring your own.
Practise under that constraint from the first day of study rather than the last week. Working problems on a phone calculator and then meeting a four-function calculator on test day is a genuinely unpleasant surprise, particularly for anything involving percentages, powers or square roots that you were quietly letting a better calculator handle.
You also get a reference sheet, and this is the part candidates leave until too late. It carries area and volume formulas, the Pythagorean theorem, simple interest as I = prt, distance as d = rt, and slope, distance and midpoint formulas, along with unit conversions and the instruction to use 3.14 or 22/7 for pi.
Study the reference sheet before test day. Not to memorise it — you do not have to — but so that you know what is on it. A candidate who knows the midpoint formula is provided approaches a coordinate geometry question completely differently from one who does not and assumes they have forgotten something they were meant to know.
Four competencies, and they are not equally weighted. Algebraic thinking is the heaviest, and it is also the one a long absence from maths damages most — which is an unhappy combination and the reason this subtest deserves more of your calendar than the other three.

If it has genuinely been years, do not start with practice questions. Practice questions measure; they do not teach, and a first practice set that comes back at thirty percent teaches nothing except discouragement.
Start instead with the three foundations that everything else on this subtest sits on, in this order. Fractions, decimals and percentages as one connected idea rather than three separate topics — because a large share of number-sense and data questions are percentage questions wearing different clothes. Then what a variable is and what it means to do the same thing to both sides of an equation; not solving quickly, but understanding what solving is. Then reading a graph or table and saying out loud what it shows before doing anything numerical with it.
Those three take a couple of weeks and they are what makes a review course work. Skipping them is why review courses do not work for people in your position.
Only then start on the competencies, heaviest first: algebraic thinking, then split your remaining time between number sense and geometry, then data. The subtest uses five official question formats, and knowing them removes a surprising amount of test-day friction: scenario, word problem, direct question, command, and graphics.
The practical consequence is that a large share of the questions are wrapped in a sentence or a picture rather than presented as bare arithmetic. Someone who has spent their preparation doing pages of naked calculations is well drilled for a subtest that does not look like that.
So practise translating. Read the scenario, say in one plain sentence what is being asked, decide what operation answers it, and only then compute. That habit is worth more marks on this subtest than speed is.
One formatting detail catches people out on units. On the reference sheet's convention, a four-digit metric number is written without a comma — 9960 km — and above four digits a space replaces the comma, as in 12 500 L. The familiar US thousands comma applies only to non-metric numbers. It is a small thing, and it has cost people marks on questions they could otherwise do.
Switch from learning to timing. One hundred minutes for thirty-five questions is a little under three minutes each, which is comfortable if you are fluent and impossible if you are still deriving things from first principles.
Work full-length timed sets with the four-function calculator and the reference sheet in front of you, and mark not just what you got wrong but why: did not know it, knew it and misread the question, knew it and ran out of time. Those three failures need three different fixes, and only the first one is about maths.
Leave the reference sheet on your desk for every practice session in these two weeks, so that on test day looking at it is a reflex rather than an admission.
