A logic grid rewards inference — building an answer from clues. A nonogram rewards constraint satisfaction — reading numbers into a picture. An elimination puzzle rewards order of operations and care — removing everything that is not the answer from a large population. They share a shelf and almost nothing else.
These three sit next to each other in shops and get recommended interchangeably, which is how people end up concluding they do not like logic puzzles when what happened is that they tried the wrong family.
They are genuinely different activities. One is about inference, one is about constraint, and one is about method. A person who loves one can find another tedious, and that is not a failure of taste — it is a real difference in what the puzzle asks of you.
This guide describes what each family is actually doing, what it rewards, and how to work out which one you will want to spend an evening on.
A logic grid gives you a handful of categories — five people, five houses, five drinks — and a set of clues that relate them. You mark a table with crosses and ticks, and each deduction opens the next.
What it rewards is chained inference. The pleasure is the click: the moment when two clues that were separately useless combine to eliminate a possibility, which eliminates another, which resolves a row.
What it demands is holding several relationships in mind at once and noticing when they interact. This is real work, and it is the reason people describe grids as the most cerebral of the three.
Its natural size is small. A grid needs to be small enough that the whole state fits on one page and in your head, which is why grids come in books of many short puzzles rather than as one long one.
A nonogram — also sold as griddler or picross — gives you a grid with numbers along the edges describing runs of filled squares, and you work out which squares are filled. A picture emerges.
What it rewards is a completely different habit: reading a constraint and finding what it forces. There is very little inference in the logic-grid sense. There is a great deal of "given this row's numbers and what I already know, these three squares must be filled and these two must be empty".
It is also the most meditative of the three. Long stretches are mechanical once you see the technique, and many solvers value exactly that — it occupies the hands and the front of the mind while leaving the rest quiet.
And there is no language in it at all, which matters more than it sounds. Nonograms are the family that works regardless of vocabulary, cultural reference or reading speed.
An elimination puzzle gives you a large population — hundreds or thousands of candidates — and clues that each remove part of it. You cross out until one is left.
What it rewards is neither inference nor constraint. Each individual deduction is usually easy: this clue removes everyone wearing glasses, so cross them out. What is hard is doing thousands of easy deductions in the right order, without losing your place, without making the one error that matters.
That makes it a puzzle about method. Read every clue before marking anything, because clues differ enormously in how much they cut and how long they take. Work the cheap heavy ones first. Sweep in one direction, one clue per pass, and finish the pass.
It is also the only one of the three that scales indefinitely. Because each clue does bulk work on the population, an elimination puzzle with fifteen thousand candidates is not impossible — it is simply long. This is the family that produces puzzles measured in evenings rather than minutes.

If the best moment for you is the click — two facts combining into a third you did not have — you are a grid person. Buy books of many short grids and enjoy the density of those moments.
If you want something absorbing that does not demand language or verbal reasoning, and you like the rhythm of technique applied repeatedly, nonograms are the family. They are also the easiest of the three to do while half-listening to something else.
If you want a puzzle that lasts, that you can put down and come back to, where being methodical is the skill and finishing feels earned — elimination. It is the family for people who have exhausted books of short puzzles and concluded, wrongly, that they need harder ones.
And a useful test if you are unsure: how did you feel about the last long jigsaw you did? People who enjoy the sustained, resumable, methodical quality of a large jigsaw are very often the people who take to elimination puzzles, and very often the ones nobody has ever recommended one to.
For grids: variety in clue types, and a difficulty progression rather than a hundred puzzles at the same level.
For nonograms: size variety, and colour if you want the pictures to be worth revealing. Also check the print quality — a grid printed too small is unusable regardless of how good the puzzle is.
For elimination: three things. Whether the solutions are protected — sealed or mirrored, so a page turn cannot spoil a week's work. Whether there are graduated hints, so being stuck has an exit that is not the answer. And whether it is genuinely self-contained, with no app, code or website that can expire.
Across all three, the format matters more than people expect. A large book that lies flat, with print you can read comfortably at ten at night, is a different object from one you have to hold open. For a puzzle that lasts several evenings, that difference decides whether it gets finished.
Possibly, but they reward different habits. Grids reward chained inference; elimination rewards order of operations and care. If what you enjoy about grids is the click of deduction, elimination gives you fewer of those and a longer, more sustained absorption instead.
